Health and Sanitation
India has been grappling with the problem of open defecation for a number of decades. All governments have organized programmes to address this problem as a priority through greater emphasis on community partnerships.
Social Centre has promoted and achieved community-based sanitation in the project areas through the involvement of village bodies, farmers’ clubs, youth, women and school children as agents of change to build a strong and sustainable movement. The main objective of the sanitation programme is to protect and promote human health by providing a clean environment and breaking the cycle of disease that is spread through poor sanitation. The overall purpose of sanitation is to provide a healthy living environment for everyone and to provide safety, security and dignity for people in their sanitation practices.
