Women comprise almost 50 percent of our population. They often face prejudice and oppression due to many family, community and social restrictions, in a male-dominated society. We believe that women are the harbingers of transformation in the family, community and society. Hence Social Centre gives priority to empowering women through the Self Help Group (SHG) Programme. Social SHGs are engaged in a variety of activities, including microfinance, skill development, livelihood promotion, microenterprise development, primary health care, and promoting leadership in political local bodies. Social Centre works through SHGs in its project areas. Women are thus empowered to develop their capacities and potential to play an active role in the family and local community, and to contribute to building up a just, self-reliant and vibrant society.
